This Kansas Centennial 1861 to 1961 book provides a fascinating snapshot of Kansas state history, published during the centennial year by the Centennial Press in Salina, Ks. in 1961. It shows over 200 cities and towns in Kansas, along with a several page historical summary about famous old Kansas trails, homesteading in Ks. and more. The city and town pages show business advertising and local landmarks from 1961 and map locations in the state with great historical facts about the towns and cities. There is a western wagon train scene on the outside front of the book.
The book is softbound with what I would call a soft “felt-like” paper material on the outside front and back. It is a large book, measuring almost 14 inches across the width, and about 10 ¾ inches in length, and is about ¾ inch thick. The pages are not numbered, and I did not count them, but the book title page says that it provides “a brief history of our state and backgrounds of more than 200 cities & towns”. This softcover book includes illustrations by Jerry Sutton.
This book came from an estate, and is in very good vintage used condition. There is some flaking, peeling, and paper loss on the edges of the paper binding spine (see photos), and a little corner and edge wear and a little dirt/soil on the cover. The inside pages are tightly bound, and are in very nice condition.
This is an unusual historical state of Kansas Centennial book that offers unique incite into this period of time. I have not seen this one before, and I encourage you not to miss this opportunity to add it to your collection.
