Antique Pewter Baby Chick Ice Cream Mold signed CC, two-part hinged metal, little chicken mould. This figural ice cream mold looks like a baby chick with turned head to me (?), but I am not sure, and I would ask you to please look at the photos and decide for yourself what this shape is. On the back under the hinge I see a trace of a lined pattern (photo) that it is my guess, or maybe my imagination, might be meant to represent tail feathers on this little chick? These lines are on the outside of the mold, and will not imprint on the molded ice cream form.
My research indicates that the “CC” mark on this mould is probably from a French manufacturer, Charles Cadot et Cie, and that this company was one of the earliest European makers of ice cream molds. The information that I found mentioned production by this manufacturer from about 1826 to about 1935. I did not find this exact mold, and I do not know the date it was produced?
Ice cream molds were made of pewter to keep the ice cream frozen longer, and yet to allow for the ice cream to be removed more easily from the mold. This interesting old ice cream mold was made to hold enough ice cream for one person.
This pewter ice cream mold measures about 2 ½” wide when closed, and is about 2 ¼” tall when closed. The pewter mold measures about 4 7/8” wide when opened up flat on the table. The ice cream mold is in excellent vintage used condition. There is some darkening in the metal that did not wash off with gentle cleaning. There are minor scratches and some pits in the pewter here and there, which you would expect in an antique mold that was lovingly used over the years. The hinge mechanism works fine, and the seam is tight. There is a dark line crease up and down above the hinge on one side that I think was done in manufacturing, and I included a photo for you to review.
Note: These antique pewter molds contain unsafe levels of lead, and should never be used for food. They make wonderful kitchen display items.
