This is a hard-to-find antique Cream of Wheat Chef Rastus black Americana African American man cloth cereal advertising doll. I estimate that the doll dates to the 1920’s or 1930’s? The doll measures about 18 inches tall, and is about 6 ½ inches in width at the widest part. The African American man is holding a blue cereal bowl with red “Cream of Wheat” printed on the bowl. The cheerful smiling black man has a red bow tie, and red and white striped pants, with touches of blue color on his shirt.
The stuffed cloth doll was hand stitched together across the bottom of the shirt, and all around the outer edges. The legs and feet are all one piece, and are not separated down the middle. The doll bends in the middle where the pants connect to the shirt, and can be leaned up against the wall and placed in a seated position.
This charming old doll has been used and played with, and has some condition issues and wear and tear (see photos). The doll has stains, soil, dirt, repairs, some holes, and the colors are faded. On the front of the shirt there is a stitched and repaired spot, and the dark colored sewing thread attaching the pants to the shirt looks like an older sewing repair to me. I did not attempt to clean or make any changes to this interesting vintage advertising item, and will let the buyer choose to do any restoration to this Cream of Wheat doll.
Rastus, the black Cream of Wheat man, was first created in the 1890’s, and he became an advertising icon character similar in fame and popularity to Aunt Jemima. It is my understanding that the Rastus advertising logo is currently owned by the Nabisco Company (?), and that Rastus is still being used to advertise some of their products.
This highly collectible vintage Cream of Wheat Rastus doll would make a great addition to your collection, and would display nicely. It would make an unusual gift for that special collector.
