Antique set of four hardcover books with gold gilt page edges in the “Tales From Foreign Tongues” series including:
Memories: A Story of German Love, translated from the German of Max Muller, by George P. Upton, published in Chicago by Jansen, McClurg & Co., 1879, 173 numbered pages.
Graziella: A Story of Italian Love, translated from the French of A. De Lamartine, by James B. Runnion, published in Chicago by Jansen, McClurg & Co., 1880, 235 numbered pages.
Madeleine: A Story of French Love, crowned by the French Academy, translated from the French of Jules Sandeau, by Francis Charlot, published in Chicago by Jansen, McClurg & Co., 1881, 244 numbered pages.
Marie: A Story of Russian Love, from the Russian of Alexander Pushkin, by Marie H. De Zielinska, published in Chicago by Jansen, McClurg & Co., 1880, 209 numbered pages.
This is a lovely set of 4 antique books in excellent vintage used condition. There is some wear and tear on the cloth that covers the outside of each book, and on the edges and corners. The lettering on the front and side spine of the books is done in gold gilt, and also the edges of the books are gold gilt. There is some wear to the gold-gilt lettering, especially on the spine area. There is some very minor age foxing, staining, yellowing, or soil here and there, that you would expect in vintage books over 125 years old.
The title pages of Memories, A Story of German Love” and also of “Graziella, A Story of Italian Love” have some large rectangular squares of age foxing, and darkening (see photo of one). On the back outside of "Madeleine" there is a small (about 1/4 inch) impression/dent pushed-in spot in the cloth cover, and a white line "scratched" area (see photo).
When you open the books, there are some areas of age wear (white paper shows in the inside spine crease/seam line between the outside cover and the first page where the red/orange paper has separated, and a tiny bit similar on the back inside cover), but the binding is good and tight on all four volumes. Inside each volume there is a handwritten in ink inscription with a name (hard to read), and from “H. C. L. W., 1881”.
Each book measures about 5 1/4 inches by about 7 inches. I would call the color of the book covers red/orange. The flower designs and the lines and lettering on the book covers are stamped or impressed designs. There are very minimal page corner creases. Each volume has a label inside the front cover that says “Grosvenor, Wotkyns, Her Book, Grace” and “Gardens of the Still Soul”.
This wonderful set of books would make an attractive display for any library, and a great gift for that special collector.
